FastPictureViewer Codec is a neat little addon that you can install on your PC to preview a lot of different extensions in the explorer. Go from this:

For me, it has been a tremendous help and takes the uncertainty away from working with .exr files, which had until now been a guessing game and didn’t give me the visual feedback I needed.
2. How to install
To install, just go here and buy (or try free) the codec:
Double click the installer, go through the steps, and that’s it!
Notice there are a lot more extensions that this addon will create a preview for, so feel free to activate or deactivate the ones that you feel are convenient for you.
And that’s it! I’ve come across many people that had just disregarded working with exr’s regularly since they’re a bit less approachable. For me, this makes it a lot easier to work with and be more in control of what’s what :)
